China-Made Metro Vehicles to Run in Mumbai

Made-in-China metro trains will ply on the first underground line being built in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai, China Business News reported on Monday.

The Nanjing SR Puzhen Rail Transport Co announced Sunday that it had signed a US 100-million dollar contract with Mumbai city to produce up to 108 carriages for 18 trains.

The subsidiary of the China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Industry Corporation will send its first metro vehicle to Mumbai in 18 months.

This deal is considered as a milestone for the Chinese manufacturer. Metro trains made in China boast a cost advantage despite having technology on par with other major producers. This has been made possible because the company has developed its own traction system which cuts production costs dramatically, the report says.
